Tokenised Payments with Klipboard Money

Updated today

Tokenised payments let you securely save a customer’s card details so you can take payment at a later date, without the customer needing to re‑enter their card information.

This is ideal for deposits, final balances, or repeat invoicing.

What is Tokenisation?

Tokenisation allows a customer to securely save their card details against an invoice.

The card can then be charged later, once payment is due.

  • No payment is taken when the card is saved

  • Onrent Events never stores or displays full card details — only the last four digits are visible

Enable Tokenised Payments

Before using tokenised payments, you must first enable the feature.

  1. Go to System Preferences

  2. Scroll to Payment Settings

  3. Set Enable tokenisation on invoices to Yes

Important

  • Tokenisation is off by default

  • If this is set to No, only standard Pay by Link payments will be available via the Klipboard Money integration.

Create an Invoice with Tokenisation

You can create an invoice in the usual way:

  • From a opportunity

  • From a project

  • As a manual invoice

When creating the invoice, complete the following additional fields:

Billing Contact

This can be found under billing address.

Select the person whose card will be used for payment.

  • This must be an contact

  • Company cards must be linked to a named person

  • Saved cards are stored against this billing contact and you’ll be sending the invoice document directly over to them.

Enable Tokenisation

Ensure tokenisation is enabled on the invoice before issuing it, this is found under Tax class.

Once complete, issue the invoice as normal and send out your invoice document to customers using the Payment URL, this appears within the document with these settings enabled.

What the Customer Sees

When the customer opens the invoice:

  1. They are asked to consent to saving their card details

  2. They can:

  • Add a new card

  • Select a previously saved card

  • Revoke consent at any time

Saving a card uses a £0.00 transaction.

No payment is taken at this stage!

Reusing Saved Cards

If you create another invoice for the same billing contact:

  • Their saved card will be available automatically

  • The customer does not need to re‑enter their card details

  • They can still look to add new card details or revoke consent

This makes repeat or staged payments faster and simpler.
