Products are goods that you will deliver to your customer; services are something that you’re going to do for them. For example, you might:

  • Charge for delivery

  • Include crew members to set up or operate kit

  • Provide consultancy or event management

You can add these to Current RMS as services. Want more information? See: What’s a service?

Creating a service is a two step process:

  1. Create the service
This is where you’ll provide the general details for the service and specify how you charge.

  2. Set up bookable resources
Assign people, vehicles, or venues to this service to say who or what is available at your company to fulfill it.

In this guide, we’ll walk through step one. Setting up bookable resources is covered in the next guide.

Get started

Go to Resources > Services and hit the green add service button at the top-right to get started.

General details

  • Name
The name of the service. This will appear throughout the system: when searching for the service to add to an opportunity, on customer paperwork, on reports, and in the main services list.

  • Tags
Great for searching and sorting, describe the service with tags here. Hit enter to turn tags blue and lock them in.

  • Image
Choose a service picture here. Some of the quotation layouts include service pictures.

  • Description
Enter a few words to service the product here. By default, this is internal-only, but your document layouts can be modified to include the service description.

Attributes

Service type

Categorize your service into service types. Like product groups, services you add to an opportunity will be automatically grouped together by type.

Want to add more service types? See: Add more service types to your system

Revenue group

Revenue groups are used when integrating Current RMS with an accounting solution. They are mapped to your accounts package. Select a revenue group for each transaction type here.

Set up new revenue groups in System Setup > Revenue Groups

Tax class

How do you charge tax for this service? Tax classes are used with tax rates and rules in order to calculate tax. Choose a tax class here.

Yes/No sliders

  • Active
Generally, you’ll want to set this to YES. When you're not supplying a service, set it as not active to hide it in the default views and prevent you from adding it to opportunities.

  • Discountable
Prevent this service from being discounted on opportunities by toggling this slider to NO.

  • Track shortages
Current will perform availability checks on this service and tell you when you don’t have enough bookable resources available to supply it. If you don’t want to track shortages, set this to NO.

Rates

You can enter up to four rates for a service: daily, hourly, a distance rate (i.e. price per mile or per kilometer), and a fixed rate. When adding a service to an opportunity,  you can choose which rate you’d like to apply.

Leave any rates that you won’t use at zero, e.g. you may not need a day or hour rate for delivery.

When you’re done, press the blue Create Service button.

Costs

Set a cost group and prices for each rate type.

The service costs are used when no specific supplier or bookable resource cost is found against this service that matches the supplier you set against a sub-contract booking on an opportunity.

Next steps

When you’ve set up your service, it’s time to add bookable resources. These can be people, vehicles, or venues.
